The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has revealed that almost 300 highly skilled and specialized health personnel deserted the facility between January and June 2025 in quest of better prospects elsewhere.
The phenomenon, which hospital authorities regard as frightening, poses a rising threat to healthcare delivery at Ghana’s primary referral center. G
Dr. Harry Akoto, Korle Bu’s Deputy Medical Director, announced the data in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, September 18, during a needs assessment visit by the administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, often known as Mahama Cares.
The needs assessment project will be implemented countrywide to provide financial assistance to people living with chronic and noncommunicable diseases who are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Dr. Akoto warned that Ghana runs the risk of losing more of its most skilled medical personnel to wealthy nations unless quick action is taken to enhance working conditions, pay, and training opportunities.
“When we look at our data, we have approximately 300 people leaving between January and June this year. These are people who are highly skilled and highly specialised.
“The issues are multifactorial; some are based on a poor work environment. But the chunk of it is remuneration. People feel they can get more out there than being here,” he explained.
