Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a government spokesperson, has clarified why former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was denied access to Chairman Wontumi during his visit to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) grounds.
He claimed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia violated a set procedure that had been agreed upon with the former vice president’s office, which is why he was unable to reach Wontumi.
“There was an agreement that he comes with just a few people but upon his arrival, he was with a huge number of persons and that was a breach of the agreement reason why he could not be allowed to see him,” Felix told Oyerepa TV in an interview.
Adding that “I don’t think Dr Bawumia going to see him would have made any difference. He did not honour the agreement with EOCO and NIB to create the atmosphere that enables EOCO and NIB”.
According to the Deputy Attorney General, Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on charges of fraud and money laundering, among other offenses.
Despite being granted bail, Wontumi was not released because his attorneys were notified that a request to modify the bail bond was pending when they were able to give it.
It is their hope that he will be released from detention today.
