According to Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Minister of Works and Housing, the government is building 1,000 dwelling units for those impacted by the Akosombo Dam leak.
During a press conference held in Accra on Monday, September 30, the minister underscored the government’s resolve to lessen the difficulties encountered by displaced individuals.
He went on to say that the beginning certificate had been obtained and that phase two of the project, which consists of 1,010 more units, had been approved.
In order to start construction in this phase, the government is now completing the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and land acquisition procedures.
“Now already, 115 [housing] units are under construction and they have gone past the 60 percent mark. Those are the units that I went to break ground for in April 2024. 115 of those units. We have also approved phase 2 of 1,010 units and we have received the commencement certificate for phase 2.”
Communities in the Lower Volta Basin were destroyed by the October 15, 2023, Akosombo Dam disaster.
More than 5,000 homes were damaged, and about 88,000 individuals were impacted. Numerous people are still without homes almost a year later.
