Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, acknowledged that the severe economic policies of the past few years caused the NPP to lose a sizable chunk of its traditional base of support.
He said that tough choices made in an effort to stabilize the economy had unforeseen political repercussions for the ruling party while speaking on PM Express on JoyNews.
“We lost the middle class, our own base, the businessmen, because there was some haircut… pensioners, educated people who ordinarily would vote NPP got disappointed,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin further justified the frustrations that followed the economic reforms, pointing to the public outcry from professionals and retirees whose funds were affected.
“To the extent that a former Chief Justice, appointed by our own administration, was on the streets fighting for her pension, it’s understandable.”
He underlined that while the NPP government sought to safeguard the economy, its attempts did not prove to be as effective as anticipated.
“We were faced with some huge challenges. We tried, but we were not too successful. In stabilising the economy, certain hard decisions had to be taken,” he explained.
