Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the majority, has questioned the government’s commitment to combating galamsey.
He acknowledged that while the NPP government made every effort to combat illicit mining, the mechanisms in place to combat galamsey under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led administration were insufficiently robust.
Demonstrating how the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the opposition party at the time, used the frail institutions and tarnished their reputation.
Nevertheless, the NDC has not demonstrated any sincerity in combating illicit mining since seizing power.
He discussed the GoldBod’s setup, which purchases gold from all sources, irrespective of the method of mining.
“They are now in government, they’ve set up the GoldBod, and they are buying gold from all manner of sources; they don’t care where the gold is coming from. I don’t see any seriousness about the fight against galamsey. I’ve not seen structures, manifest structures,” he said on Accra-based Joy News.
