Upper East Region: 21 pregnant candidates, 17 nursing mothers sits for 2025 BECE
A worrying trend is occurring in the Upper East Region as 19,523 applicants are enrolled in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), including 17 nursing moms and 21 pregnant females.
These numbers only represent incidents that are visible, meaning that the true numbers may be higher, according to Nathaniel N-yaaba, the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer.
Mr. N-yaaba disclosed in an interview with Adom News that there are 10,681 female candidates and 8,842 male candidates in total.
The exam is being administered at 90 locations throughout the region, he continued.
Additionally, the GES has warned students against exam cheating and asked parents to help their children by avoiding swarming exam locations.
Concerns over adolescent welfare and girl-child education in the area have been highlighted by the BECE’s participation of pregnant girls and nursing moms.
The high rate of female engagement has been praised by stakeholders, who emphasize the importance of addressing the underlying causes of teen pregnancy and early pregnancy.
