The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) is calling for a 50% increase in base pay as labor organizations prepare to engage the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations in future compensation negotiations.
According to the union, the rising cost of living, rising utility rates, and rising fuel prices have severely eroded the real value of workers’ pay, making it harder for public sector employees to maintain their income.
The TEWU thinks that only a significant salary increase can restore fairness and protect workers from the current economic difficulties.
In the meantime, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, has acknowledged the union’s worries and stated his hope that their requests will be in line with the government’s financial capabilities.
He promised that as part of continuing talks with organized labor, the administration would seriously consider the suggestion.
