Supreme Court to hear suit challenging Chief Justice’s removal process on April 9
A case contesting the process being utilized to perhaps remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office has been scheduled for hearing by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah, an Old Tafo MP, filed the lawsuit, contesting the constitutional procedure that President John Mahama started after receiving three petitions calling for the Chief Justice’s dismissal.
Under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, Assafuah, backed by former Attorney-General Godfred Dame, contends that the Chief Justice must be given a chance to address the accusations before the President contacts the Council of State.
He argues that not informing her in advance compromises judicial independence and her right to a fair trial.
It is anticipated that the Supreme Court will decide whether the President’s actions comply with the constitutional clauses that control the dismissal of a serving Chief Justice.
