John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and former president, declared that his administration would guarantee that women hold at least thirty percent of the appointments.
He mentioned that the Affirmative Action Law will be put into effect to accomplish this.
Speaking at the NDC’s Women’s Manifesto launch in Kumasi, Mr. Mahama promised that the party would operationalize the Affirmative Action Act of 2024 to guarantee that women hold a minimum of 30% of political appointments.
Mr Mahama stated the majority of unemployed persons in Ghana are women and that Ghana needs to reach to a place where economic empowerment is a right.
He added, “Maternity leave will be extended to four months while fathers will enjoy one-week paternity leave. Men must provide proof”.
He went on to say that although women have made a substantial contribution to the growth of our country, gender inequity is still widespread, especially in the informal sector, where 92% of workers are women who frequently lack safety nets. This significant industry accounts for as much as 30–40% of Ghana’s GDP.
He claimed that the situation has made poverty among women worse, as seen by the 2020 census, which showed that 3.76 million of Ghana’s 7.3 million impoverished people are women.
