More than 2,000 foreigners who were begging on the streets have been sent back to their countries of origin, according to Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak.
According to him, there are now far fewer beggars on the streets of Accra and other large cities as a result of the practice.
Speaking at the inaugural Government Accountability Series, Mr. Mubarak clarified that the program is a component of a larger plan to clean up public areas and bring order back to cities.
A platform called the Government Accountability Series was established to inform the public about the John Mahama administration’s performance and to encourage openness and civic participation.
Plans are in place to continue the repatriation efforts and guarantee that foreign nationals who engage in street begging are permanently removed from public areas, the interior minister said.
He also discussed the Ghana Police Service’s recent victories against armed robbery and illicit mining (galamsey), pointing out that the Service has taken a more proactive stance in combating crime.
“The results so far are positive,” he stated, as he reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring public safety, law, and order across the country.
