GES extends reopening date for single-track SHS

A modification in the reopening date for single-track senior high schools (SHSs) across the country has been formally notified by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The original plan called for pupils to resume classes on March 29, 2025, after taking a holiday on March 4.

However, the date has now been moved to April 23, 2025, in light of the approaching Eid-Ul-Fitr public holidays and other factors.

Regional directors of education were instructed in a GES statement to make sure that all senior high technical school and single-track SHS heads inform students, parents, and guardians of this change.

“By this letter, regional directors of education are requested to communicate this information to all heads of single-track senior high and senior high technical schools to inform parents, guardians, and students to take note of the new date and prepare accordingly,” the statement read.

Prior to this, the Ministry of the Interior had stated that Sunday, March 30, 2025, will be the day of Eid-Ul-Fitr. Accordingly, the President of Ghana established Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as extra public holidays through an Executive Instrument (E.I.).

“However, in view of the fact that 30th March 2025 falls on a Sunday and in the interest of the public, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), declared Monday, March 31, 2025, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as additional public holidays and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement from the Ministry of the Interior explained.

GES had originally rescheduled the reopening date for April 1, 2025, because these public holidays fell within the original reopening period.

In order to facilitate better academic planning and guarantee a seamless return to school, it was ultimately determined that students would restart on April 23, 2025.

It is recommended that students, parents, and guardians pay attention to the updated timetable and make the required arrangements.
