Today, Monday, May 26, 2025, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is scheduled to make an appearance before the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The outspoken politician’s presence comes after a joint team of police and National Security agents failed to arrest him at his home on Friday, May 23.
Tens of NPP supporters gathered to Chairman Wontumi’s home to protest the attempted arrest.
Many of the audience, which grew throughout the morning, questioned the purpose of the operation and denounced the use of heavily armed security guards who had surrounded the property.
According to reports, Chairman Wontumi promised the authorities that he would accept the invitation, even though the reason for the attempted arrest has not been disclosed.
According to reports, he consented to voluntarily appear before the CID on the designated date.
Speaking to Citi News, Wontumi’s legal counsel, Kwame Adom Appiah, reaffirmed their readiness to cooperate with the police.
“We are practising democracy. Wontumi is not someone who can hide from the cameras. He is not someone who is going to run away. He has investments in Ghana, and he is not going to go anywhere. If you want him any time or day, you are going to get him,” he stated.
“We have not done anything criminal, and we are not afraid of getting to them,” he added.
Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, the deputy interior minister, responded to public outrage over the attempted arrest by defending the security agencies’ actions and stating that their strategy was within the parameters of their authority.
