President Nana Akufo-Addo reportedly regrets collaborating with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, according to Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, the founder and president of Group Nduom.
He claimed that when Mr. Ofori-Atta was permitted to serve as the nation’s Finance Minister, the President’s belief that he was the most qualified applicant for the position did not come to pass.
Papa Kwesi also claimed that because his cousin, Ofori-Atta, assisted in raising money for the NPP’s 2016 and 2020 election campaigns, the President had assigned him to the finance ministry.
“He is the one the President trusted to raise money for his campaigns, and then when they won power, they entrusted him with running the economy.
“This has proven the old saying that it’s not necessarily those who help bring you to power who will make you successful once you get there,” he claimed.
“I believe the President has regretted the decision to place our economy in the hands of the investment analyst who became Finance Minister, Mr Ofori-Atta,” he added.
Papa Kwesi also claimed that the country’s financial sector was “set on the path of destruction.”
He stated that the “owners” of the economy needed to be held accountable, even criminalised.
Many people, especially members of opposition parties, have blamed the former Finance Minister for mismanaging the country’s economy.
Recent studies and analyses indicate that Ghana’s economy has experienced a notable downturn in recent years.
Additionally, according to the World Bank, the nation’s public debt skyrocketed as a result of fiscal policies implemented in reaction to outside shocks that cut off access to global financial markets.
Debt crisis, declining foreign reserves, and rising inflation resulted from this.
Dr Nduom is not contesting in this year’s election. His primary concern, he says, is ensuring that the Ghanaian populace can find jobs and become self-sufficient, which is why he continues to raise these issues.
He mentioned this in his Live Facebook interaction on Wednesday, a weekly programme he entitled “Disappointed but not Discouraged”.
