Sam George has intervened to halt Accra’s contentious enforcement campaign against unlicensed delivery riders.
“I have directed this afternoon an immediate halt to the ongoing enforcement action by the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission,” he announced in a post on X, following chaotic scenes that unfolded during the operation on Thursday, August 21.
The Ghana Police Service and the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) together undertook the exercise, which led to the confiscation of multiple motorcycles and tense altercations with irate riders close to the National Theatre.
Viral video of the altercations sparked intense public outrage.
The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation clarified, however, that while rules must be followed, they must also be applied with the needs of the public in mind.
“I believe the Commission needs to do more stakeholder engagements and public sensitisation before the enforcement activities commence. We must enforce the law with a humane face to it,” he stated.
In addition, he reaffirmed intentions to convene stakeholders in the next few days to develop a plan of action that all parties can agree upon for putting the regulations into effect.
