Three radio stations operated by the Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, which is owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have been suspended by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for violating broadcasting laws.
95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi were among the stations that were cited for their failure to rectify regulatory violations, which included using Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies without authorization and operating from prohibited transmitter positions.
The action comes after President John Dramani Mahama’s 30-day grace period for defaulting stations to correct infractions has ended.
According to the NCA, Wontumi Multimedia was suspended because it did not fully comply during the amnesty period.
Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which forbids conducting business without a current Certificate of Compliance, was the basis for the enforcement action.
After failing to implement corrective actions during the grace period, six additional radio stations nationwide were also shut down.
The NCA emphasized that it will keep an eye on the broadcasting industry to make sure that license requirements and Ghanaian FM radio rules are being followed.
