My objective was to provide Ghanaians with value not to destroy DStv– Sam George

Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has explained that the government’s recent discussions with MultiChoice Africa were only intended to secure greater value for Ghanaians, not to harm the company’s operations.

His statement comes after a historic contract with MultiChoice that will go into effect on October 1, 2025. Under the agreement, all DStv subscription plans in Ghana would be immediately upgraded to more expensive plans at no additional expense, giving consumers, depending on their bouquet, an additional 33–50% in value.

Customers on the GHS59 Padi Bouquet, for example, will be upgraded to the GHS99 Access Bouquet, which will save them 40% and give them access to 35 more channels. Subscribers of Access Bouquet (GHS99) will switch to the GHS190 Family Bouquet and receive a 48% discount. With a 50% value boost, Family Bouquet subscribers (GHS190) will be promoted to Compact (GHS380) and have access to live football games. The Compact Plus bundle (GHS570), which saves 33%, will be given to compact customers (GHS380).

Those on Compact Plus (GHS570) will get Premium (GHS865) with 18 extra channels and a 34 percent value gain. Premium subscribers will retain their current content and also gain automatic entry into a draw to win fully paid trips to selected Premier League matches, subject to terms and conditions.

The offer applies to both existing and new subscribers starting October 1. There are no restrictions on bouquet choice. In addition, MultiChoice has slashed the price of its Zapper decoder and dish kit by 50 percent for new customers, bringing the cost down to GHS555.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday September 29, Mr George noted that “It is important that you bear in mind that despite what people may think, I didn’t set out to go and destroy DStv’s business.

“I had one sole goal — to achieve more for the Ghanaian people for the service that they are paying.”

Meanwhile, the new arrangement follows weeks of regulatory pressure after public complaints about rising DStv subscription fees. The National Communications Authority, acting on the Minister’s directive, set up a stakeholder committee to assess the fairness of DStv pricing in Ghana and recommend solutions. The committee also addressed cross-border piracy and the sustainability of DStv’s operations in Ghana.

Samuel George had initially proposed a 30 percent value increase. “I went into this with a request for 30 percent. What we have now — the lowest is 33 percent, the highest is 50 percent — and I extend my warmest gratitude to the MultiChoice team for that,” he said during an earlier presser on Monday.

He praised MultiChoice for its cooperation and described the final outcome as a significant achievement that benefits both the public and the service provider.

“The committee is of the view that this increased value offer addresses the government’s concerns. It reduces pressure on Ghanaian households while ensuring the sustainability of DStv’s service in Ghana,” he said.
