Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly opposed Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s proposal to build a new legislative chamber and establish a special hospital for MPs.
Afenyo-Markin, a member of parliament representing Effutu, made the argument that legislators needed a specialized healthcare facility to meet their medical needs during the swearing-in of the Parliamentary Service Board on Monday, March 17.
He also rekindled debates about the necessity of a new parliamentary chamber, highlighting the importance of both measures in enhancing the working circumstances of Members of Parliament.
Mahama Ayariga, however, rejected the plans, pointing to Ghana’s economic difficulties as a major factor that made such initiatives unacceptable at this time.
He emphasized that it was unnecessary to prioritize a new chamber and a hospital exclusively for MPs given the nation’s urgent financial difficulties.
