Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister-designate for Justice, has promised to uphold citizens’ rights by reintroducing a modernized public tribunal system.
Restoring public tribunals was part of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 agenda, which aimed to decentralize the administration of justice among the several regions.
Assuring the Appointments Committee of Parliament during his vetting on January 13, 2025, that such transgressions would not occur under his leadership, Dr. Ayine addressed concerns expressed in the Africa Watch Human Rights Report (Volume 4) about historical abuses related to public tribunals.
In order to control the system and guard against possible abuse, he also suggested creating and passing a Public Tribunal Court Act, which would guarantee that the tribunals maintain the greatest standards of justice and fairness.
“My proposal or my thinking going into this office is that we will enact a public tribunal’s Act that will be comprehensive and that will contain restrictions. In terms of the conduct of the affairs of the tribunal.”
He also promised to realign the nation with the 1992 Constitution’s tenets.
