The Ghana Skills for Jobs Initiative, a flagship youth employment initiative created to supply trained labor for the nation’s growing industries, was unveiled by Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry.
“Across the world, Special Economic Zones have proven to be effective tools of transformation. Ghana must adapt these lessons to our own context.
“By investing in skills, we are ensuring our young people become the backbone of our industrialisation agenda,” the Minister said at the launch during the National Economic Zones Policy Roundtable in Accra on Thursday.
It is anticipated that the program will annually train a minimum of 15,000 youth, providing them with technical and industry-relevant skills to support Ghana’s industrialization efforts.
Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare also said that her Ministry is working with the Ministry of Finance to draft a Cabinet Memorandum in order to obtain permission for a framework for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) that is favorable to investors.
She claims that the roadmap will address enduring obstacles in Ghana’s industrial sector, such as high production costs, restricted financial access, and a lack of acceptance of new technologies.
She added that specific policy frameworks are being finalized for Cabinet consideration in the areas of medicines, automotive components, and textiles and apparel.
She added that the Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC) Act is now being reviewed, which will help modernize the nation’s investment policy and increase its competitiveness internationally.
