A suspect has been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service in relation to the killing of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
A close friend of the deceased, the suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, has been charged with betraying him by giving his photos to a well-known Ghanaian politician before to his murder.
Before being fired, Amakye and Ahmed Suale worked together at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, where they reportedly had a tight relationship.
Amakye’s betrayal is viewed as a startling development because the two were known to have worked together on a number of investigative initiatives.
“The suspect used to visit the deceased, a close friend at his Madina-based residence,” a source close to the police Criminal Investigation Department revealed.
On January 16, 2019, Ahmed Suale was murdered close to his Madina family home after working with the BBC on an investigative piece that revealed pervasive corruption in African football, especially in Ghana.
FBI cooperation
The FBI in the USA was able to obtain crucial information as a result of the inquiry, including phone conversations the deceased had with the suspect just days prior to his passing.
The relatives and coworkers of the deceased journalist have had some relief when the alleged murderer of Ahmed Suale was apprehended.
It is still unclear how the case will develop, though, as the inquiry is still underway.
Many have questioned the Ghana Police Service’s handling of the case, raising concerns about the length of time it took to make an arrest.
