Within the next 24 hours, the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is expected to declare its presidential and vice-presidential nominees for the general elections in 2024.
This follows the death of Akua Donkor, the party’s founder and presidential candidate. The GFP was then given ten days by the Electoral Commission to designate a substitute.
The party’s parliamentary candidate for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Patrick Tetteh, told Citi News that the GFP is having an important executive meeting on Monday, November 4, in advance of the official announcement that is anticipated on Tuesday.
“Within the next 24 hours, GFP is coming out again with a press conference. The GFP is coming out to announce the presidential candidate and the vice-presidential candidate who is contesting for the 2024 election.
“We are having an executive meeting as we speak and we preparing to come out to the general public to announce the presidential and vice-presidential candidate,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the party has described as disrespectful that it should withdraw its participation in this election over the demise of its leader.
Tetteh insists the best way to honour Akua Donkor’s memory is not to withdraw from the polls.
“If anybody is talking about somebody who independently has founded a political party, who is number three in the 2024 general election and you are telling me that if you want to honour such a person who has been able to fight her way to this point you want to honour her, you want her to withdraw out of this election.
“In the first way, it doesn’t speak well to me. So, it feels like it is already out of context…This is a total disrespect to GFP,” he noted.
