Galamsey was a significant source of funding for the NPP – Kwakye Ofosu alleges
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications and Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, has charged that the former Akufo-Addo-led administration was implicated in illicit mining, often known as galamsey.
Kwakye Ofosu attacked the previous administration for not addressing the environmental situation during an appearance on Face to Face on Channel One TV.
“The previous government completely failed to address it. I have said it and I will repeat it — that government was complicit in galamsey. Their party hierarchy was involved,” he asserted.
He cited studies by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who was selected by the previous administration to spearhead the campaign against illicit mining.
“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who they themselves chose to lead the fight, has a report which is damning and shows the involvement of government officials, party officials,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
The Minister further emphasized that galamsey was a major source of finance for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the time, which explained the administration’s lack of action.
“He has gone on record to have said that galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP. So it was little wonder that they were not interested in fighting it,” he added.
