Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, revealed that political parties were responsible for the disruption of the parliamentary results collation process in 12 unresolved constituencies.
Due to early disturbances, the commission had previously ordered a recollection of legislative results in several constituencies. The recollation was moved to the Tesano Police Training Center to guarantee a seamless procedure.
While the process went smoothly at first, it was again interrupted by leaders and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, Suhum, Akwatia, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, and Tema Central are among the impacted constituencies.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, December 19, 2024, Jean Mensa clarified that the actions of the political parties had hindered the commission’s ability to continue the collation process for the remaining constituencies.
“Our collation centres were once again disrupted and taken over by political party leaders and supporters and results were declared for those constituencies without due process being followed. In the case of Okaikwei Central, a winner was declared without any collating results from 31 polling stations.
“In the case of the Ablakuma North constituency, a winner was declared without collating results from 62 pooling stations. This is unacceptable. It is important to note that the declarations made by our staff were made under threat and the commission considers this illegal. Those declarations as well as others that have gone on in other constituencies will not be upheld by the commission,” she stated.
