The trial of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is set to begin on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
This followed his appearance before the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday, October 6, 2025, in accordance with a mandate from Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
Noting that charges against the NPP regional chairman had already been approved, Dr. Ayine had threatened to arrest him if he did not report to the CID on Friday, October 3, 2025.
Charges against Chairman Wontumi are related to suspected illicit mining operations using Akonta Mining Limited, a business purportedly tied to him. Since then, GH¢1 million in bail has been granted to him.
Andy Appiah-Kubi, his attorney, accompanied him when he appeared before investigators.
Following the interaction, Chairman Wontumi addressed the media and praised the professionalism of the Attorney General’s Office and the police.
“I want to congratulate the police system for showing professionalism. We also want to thank the Attorney General for facilitating the entire process,” he said.
He confirmed that the charge against him involves “mining without a license”, adding that the matter would be fully addressed in court.
“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not to maintain innocence, but we are allowed to proceed and then present our defence,” he added.
