By purportedly running for office, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, the president of the National House of Chiefs, has been accused by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, national chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of straying from the NDC’s neutral stance and participating in partisan politics.
Speaking to the people of Odumase in the Asante Akim Central Constituency on Sunday, November 10, as part of his Ashanti Regional campaign, Asiedu Nketia said that the president of the National House of Chiefs has been spotted endorsing the NPP, which could damage the party’s reputation and the country’s democratic process, rather than using his power to resolve the current parliamentary deadlock.
He further claimed that the president had compromised culture and tradition by abusing his office.
“He [Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II] claims to be the president of the National House of Chiefs. I’ve seen him wear NPP-branded shorts and shirts campaigning for the party in his hometown. How can a leader of traditional authorities speak on the ills of the governing party if he openly supports them?
“Have you heard or read any statement from him criticising the government? Now, we have no leader to speak to the ills in the country. The National House of Chiefs should be in the position to resolve the issues going on in parliament.”
