Asiedu Nketia, the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), believes that the NPP should not have run in the Akwatia by-election.
He said the party ought to have realized that the NDC should have been awarded the seat automatically as they could contribute to Akwatia’s development and they are no longer in office.
He was speaking in Akwatia, where he has been running for office in preparation for the by-election scheduled for September 2, 2025.
“I am of the view that the NPP shouldn’t have contested the Akwatia seat. They should have left it for us because we are the ones in government. We can do whatever we want because we have the numbers too in Parliament.
I don’t think you people deserve an opposition MP. You deserve an MP who is in power and can be sent by the government to bring about development. You don’t deserve an MP who will join the NPP’s 87 MPs to walk out and, at the end of the month, draw his salary. Akwatia deserves Bernard Bediako, whose party is in power and can cause a change,” he told the charged NDC crowd.
On September 2, 2025, voters in Akwatia will choose a member of parliament.
According to the Ghana Police Service, 5,500 officers have been sent in to maintain order before, during, and after the election. Any behavior that violates the law will not be tolerated by police.
Since the NDC intends to utilize masked police officers to incite violence in the constituency in an effort to create fear and keep people from turning out in large numbers to vote, the New Patriotic Party has threatened that it will not support any masked officers.
