Akufo-Addo could have taxed air if ….. – MP

Former MP for the Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, has sharply criticized President Akufo-Addo’s propensity to tax the Ghanaian people, speculating that, given his propensity to tax almost every area of the economy, the president might even enact a “breathing tax.”

On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Sorogho, who also held the position of Board Chairman for the Ghana National Fire Service, discussed his worries regarding what he believes to be the president’s unquenchable desire to tax common Ghanaians in an interview with Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman on the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM.

He continued by saying that President Akufo-Addo is unique among Ghanaian leaders in that he has borrowed a great deal, which has left the nation unable to pay off its debt.

Alhaji Sorogho emphasized the dependence on the Debt Exchange Program to manage the debt load, pointing out that Ghana has only experienced difficulties fulfilling its debt obligations under Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Sorogho went on to say that each citizen of Ghana would be expected to contribute a significant amount if the country’s debt were to be divided among its people, stating the figure of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (200,000,000 old cedis).

He believes that the actions of President Nana Addo and his government are to blame for the current financial catastrophe, highlighting in particular the effect of their economic choices on the nation’s debt management.
