We won’t review new passport prices – Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister

The latest changes to passport application fees will not be reviewed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Reintegration has declared emphatically.

The Minority Caucus in Parliament is pushing for a reversal of the new passport application fees, labeling them as draconian. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament and MP for North Tongu, made remarks that prompted this declaration.

The application fees for passport services were raised by the Foreign Affairs Ministry to GH¢500 for a 32-page standard booklet and GH¢644 for a 48-page standard booklet as of April 1.

In addition, GH¢700 for the 32-page option and GH¢800 for the 48-page option will be charged for expedited services.

Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the deputy minister for foreign affairs and regional integration, reaffirmed that the fees would not change in response to Ablakwa’s demands for a review of the upward hikes.

addressing reporters “It has come to stay with the support of the majority of Ghanaians,” stated Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong. He is powerless to change it. He is free to make his noise outside. We will meet with him on the floor of Parliament to discuss and debate the matter if he wishes to bring it before the legislature.

“And at the end of the day, I can bet my last Cedi he will fall flat on his face. The reason why we are introducing this, like I said, principally, is the fact that we need to invest and improve service delivery.”
