The Electoral Commission has disclosed that about 7,969,887 prospective voters were able to authenticate their details at the just ended voter’s exhibition exercise, the EC has stated.
According to the EC, the number represents 46.9 percent of all the 17,007,726 who registered during the last registration exercise.
Jean Mensa, the chairperson of EC made this known while briefing the media on the voter’s exhibition exercise, originally held from Friday, September 18, to Friday, 25 September, and extended to Sunday, September 27, 2020.
At the end of the exercise, she explained that 698, 404 voters verified their details using the EC’s SMS shortcode.
She said 7,271,498 persons also verified theirs at the 33,367 exhibition centres in person, stating that most persons in the rural areas turned up physically for the exercise while those in the urban areas mostly used the SMS shortcode.
Comparing those who verified their details in the provisional 2020 new voters register, the EC Chairperson said in 2016, 45.6 percent verified their names over a 21-day period whiles 46.9 percent verified their details in the new register over a 10-day period.
