Thomas Partey was advised by his father to join Arsenal to help the Gunners regain Champions League qualification amid interest from London rivals Chelsea. Partey finally completed his £45million move to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day last Monday. The Ghana international had been linked with a switch to the Emirates throughout the summer window.
After months of speculation, Arsenal activated the 27-year-old’s release clause.
Chelsea were also linked with Partey as an alternative to West Ham star Declan Rice.
Partey’s father Jacob has confirmed that the Blues were interested in his son.
“We actually weren’t disturbed by anything because we hoped a bigger team will come for Partey,” he told Joy Online.
“We were aware of the [other teams that were interested]: Juventus, Chelsea and so forth. So about all these we knew God was with us.
“From that minute we started to dance to ‘Party after Party’.”
Partey’s decision to swap the Champions League with Atletico for the Europa League with Arsenal has been questioned.
His father admits Partey was looking to move to a side competing in Europe’s elite club competition.
