Former Interior Minister Mark Woyongo passes on at 78

According to the most recent claims on social media, Mark Owen Woyongo, the former interior minister and member of parliament for Navrongo Central, has passed away.

Some of his social media fans verified the news of his passing by posting tributes and condolences.

Though the exact time and location of his passing remain unknown, it is thought to have occurred on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

The 49-year-old son of the former interior minister was just laid to rest.

His two children and wife, Cecilia Wuni Woyongo, survive him.

Veteran politician and communicator Mark Woyongo held a number of positions in National Democratic Congress (NDC) administrations.

He was elected in 2012 and served as the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central from 2013 to 2017. After Joseph Kofi Adda of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) defeated him for the seat in the 2016 election, he announced his retirement from politics.

In addition, he served as the Interior Minister from 2014 to 2017 as well as the Minister for the Upper East Region from 2009 to 2012 and the Minister for Defense from 2013 to 2014.

He was well-known for his contribution to maintaining national security and peace, particularly during the widely acclaimed free and fair 2016 election.
In addition, he was the proprietor and CEO of Diamond FM, a radio station serving the Northern Region’s population with news and entertainment, located in Tamale.

On June 9, 1946, he was born in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region. He went to the Ghana Institute of Journalism in Accra and Notre Dame Secondary School in Navrongo.

At the Ghana High Commission in London, he held the positions of Minister Counselor for Information, Public Relations Officer, and Regional Information Officer.

In 2005, he served on the National Anniversary Planning Committee, and in 2010, he was elected to the position of Board Chairman of the Upper East Region’s Irrigation Company (ICOUR).
In addition, he belonged to the National Security Council, the Armed Forces Council, and the Police Council.
He was a philanthropist and devoted Catholic who gave his support to numerous charities and initiatives in his district and surrounding areas.
His devotion to the country and his duty will live on in his memory.
