2024 Elections: Polls to close at 3: pm – EC proposes
To improve transparency, the Electoral Commission (EC) proposes that the 2024 general election polling end at 3:00 p.m.
The EC’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, highlighted the 2020 election experience, claiming that by 1:pm, over 70% of polling stations were empty.
This, she claims, is due to the construction of many polling stations, which sped up the procedure.
Mrs. Mensa emphasized the plan to establish a large number of polling stations, each with a capacity of 500 voters, in order to shorten voting time.
Due to the increasing number of voting locations, voters spent no more than five minutes casting their ballots in the previous election.
“We are convinced that closing the polls at 3 pm will enable counting and collating to take place in broad daylight and promote the needed transparency and orderliness we so desire.
“We trust that our Parliament will support this drive to ensure greater transparency and orderliness in our electoral process,” Mrs Mensa said.
