Six Coup Plotters Sentenced To De.ath By Hanging

The High Court in Accra has condemned six of the nine defendants who were on trial for plotting to stage a coup to death by hanging.

This followed the three-member panel led by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe’s verdict of guilty on the counts of high treason and conspiracy to commit treason.

Donya Kafui, also known as Ezor; Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, also known as Bright Alan Yeboah, the blacksmith; Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, the fleet manager; Lance Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon; WO II Esther Saan Dekuwine, also known as Mama Gee; and Johannes Zikpi are these people.

On the other hand, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, Col. Samuel Kodjo Gameli, and ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo have all been cleared and released.

On the accusation of abetment, ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo and Col. Samuel Kodzo were found not guilty.

On the other side, Corporal Seidu Abubakar was acquitted of the charges of high treason and conspiracy. The prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence to establish the defendants’ guilt, the court said.

However, the court found that the six accused parties were now found guilty as follows. Blacksmith Donya Kafui found guilty of high treason and conspiracy to commit treason, Bright Fleet manager Alan Debrah was also found guilty on both charges.

The others Lance and Johannes Zikpi Corporal Ali Solomon was convicted of high treason conspiracy. WOII Esther Saan Dekuwine and Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon, both soldiers, were convicted guilty of plotting to commit high treason.

Following the parties’ notification to the court that all of their written submissions had been received, the judgment date was set for November 22, 2023.

On April 24, 2021, Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the now-deceased Chief Executive Officer of Citadel Hospital, and ACP Dr. Agordzo were charged in a variety of ways with high treason, high treason conspiracy, and high treason abetment.

Charges for conspiracy to commit treason and high treason were brought against Dr. Mac Palm (A1–now deceased), Donya Kafui alias Ezor (A2), Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu alias Bright Alan Yeboah (A3), Yohannes Zikpi (A4), Warrant Officer Class Two Esther Saan Dekuwine (A6), Cpl Seidu Abubakar (A7), Lance Corporal Ali Solomon (A8), and Cpl Sylvester Akanpewon (A9).

ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo (A10) and Col. Samuel Kodzo Gameli (A5) were accused of aiding and abetting.

They belonged to Take Action Ghana (TAG), a non-governmental organization founded by the late Dr. Frederick Mac-Palm.

The initial accuser and the mastermind of the scheme, Dr. Frederick MacPalm, was declared dead in March 2023 and was dropped from the lawsuit.
