Sack non-performing MPs – Prof. Mike Oquaye

Former Speaker of the House of Commons Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye has stated that there is no need for Members of Parliament to remain in office after years of inactivity.

His remarks follow worries expressed regarding several New Patriotic Party (NPP) seasoned lawmakers who were unable to select forms to be re-elected to the legislature in 2025.

He has proposed that the NPP do a cost-benefit analysis of the MPs in their caucus and show nonperforming ones the door, regardless of their prior experience as lawmakers, exactly as it is done in other advanced democracies.

“The NPP should continue to have a cost benefit analysis of all MPs… of course who are not performing, they know and for that matter take action on them; the labour and the consecutive parties do that. When assessment is made, they may want to drop you,” he noted.

When the New Patriotic Party announced nominations for the 2024 elections, nearly twenty of its legislators did not select forms to run for their respective seats.

Some political analysts believe that the scenario is detrimental to Ghana’s democracy because the Legislature needs more experienced members to improve its direction.

The former Speaker of Parliament claims that just because a member has served a long time in the House does not indicate that they should be retained in office, even though this is not ideal for the nation’s democracy.

He informs Beatrice Claire Adu of 3News that some of them may be departing as well because they are aware of their subpar performance and have taken the honorable path out of fear of losing the elections.

“It can be pitiful when after years, the person has to leave Parliament. Of course it doesn’t mean therefore, no matter how nonperforming a Member of Parliament is, merely fact that he or she has been there for long, then the person must continue to be there…this should be part of the think-tanking of people who are interested in civil society affairs,” he suggested.
