NPP’s Ama Busia passes on

Ama Busia, a well-known member of the Council of Elders and the former first vice chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away.

Following a brief illness, the late Prime Minister Kofi Abrefa Busia’s sister is said to have died on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.

As to a report published on Asaaseradio.com, Ama Busia’s son, Dr. Obeng Busia, verified her demise at the Nyaho Medical Center on Tuesday morning.

Ama Busia, who was 87 years old when she passed away, was nevertheless a powerful and well-liked member of the NPP right up to the very end.

Ama Busia, well-known for her political criticism and activities against the Acheampong government, encountered hardship and was incarcerated seven times. She was detained for ninety days after her sixth arrest.

Even though Ama Busia had hardships, her life’s course was altered by education after she lost her mother at the age of 13 and her father at the age of 6.

Her contribution to the formation of the Northern People’s Party was substantial, as it later united with Danquah and Busia to become the present-day New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Resilient politician Ama Busia served in a number of NPP leadership roles. Following the NPP’s victory in the 2000 elections under John Agyekum Kufuor, she was a member of the Council of State.

Ama has held the NPP’s first and third national vice chairmanships in the past.

She completed her schooling at Kumasi’s Methodist Middle Girls’ School and Wenchi Methodist School before attending Komenda Training College to become a teacher.

Along with her brother Kofi Abrefa Busia, Ama Busia went into exile in 1959 and attended Regent Street Polytechnic to study institutional management and catering.
