Germany appoints Julian Nagelsmann as new head coach

Next summer, Germany will host Euro 2024 under the leadership of Julian Nagelsmann.

The 36-year-old’s appointment to succeed Hansi Flick as manager of the men’s squad was approved by the German Football Federation (DFB), and his contract is valid until the conclusion of the competition in July of the following year.

Nagelsmann most recently managed German champions Bayern Munich until being fired in March and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, a former Chelsea manager.

Injury ended Nagelsmann’s playing career at the age of 20, and he transitioned into coaching. In 2015, Hoffenheim gave him his big break.

After leaving RB Leipzig, he joined Bayern in 2021.

The national team had lost four of their previous five games before Flick was fired earlier this month, including a 4-1 loss to Japan. The DFB stated that Nagelsmann had been their “unanimous choice” to succeed Flick.

“We have a European Championship in our own country, and that’s something special — something that only occurs occasionally,” stated Nagelsmann.

“I am quite eager to accept this task. Next year, we’ll be a close-knit bunch.

The United States and Mexico, two of the 2026 World Cup co-hosts, will be the opponents in his first matches in charge next month.

In November, Germany is also scheduled to play Austria.
