Real Madrid is showing an interest in Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez, according to reports in Europe. It has been a quiet transfer window by Madrid’s standards, with the focus mainly on departures – such as that of James Rodriguez to Everton – rather than signings.
Like many clubs, they have been reluctant to spend heavily due to the financial implications of the pandemic. With that in mind, Foot Mercato report that they will delay bids for Kylian Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga until next summer.
However, they could still make one marquee signing before the transfer deadline this October. According to the French outlet, they are weighing up a move for Riyad Mahrez.
The Algerian winger enjoyed a prolific season with Man City in 2019-20, where he was one of five players to reach double figures in terms of goals. He also added nine assists in the Premier League.
Foot Mercato claim that Real Madrid have now asked for information about Mahrez, who started 21 Premier League games last season. The club have opened communications with his entourage.
The prospect of having a front three of Mahrez, Karim Benzema and Eden Hazard excites Madrid. Both Mahrez and Hazard like to come inside onto their stronger foot and have an eye for goal.
However, City still have the player under contract until 2023, and Madrid are yet to find out if they would be open to selling him.
Besides, Madrid would only be able to pursue Mahrez if they could find a buyer for Gareth Bale first.
The Welsh winger has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu over the past couple of years, and has admitted his discontent at their failure to let him leave.
