2024 World University Rankings: UCC remains best university in Ghana, 1st in West Africa

As the top university in Ghana and West Africa, the University of Cape Coast has retained its top ranking.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024 support this.

The institution won bragging rights as the top university in Ghana, the best in West Africa, the fourth greatest university in Africa, and the best university in the world for research influence in the rankings for 2022 and 2023.

The institution was still named the best in Ghana and West Africa in the 2024 list, which was just announced. However, it fell somewhat from fourth to seventh place overall in Africa.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 include 1,904 universities countries and regions.

The table is based on Times Higher Education 2024 ranking’s new WUR 3.0 methodology, which includes 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

This year’s ranking analyzed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Overall, they collected 411,789 data points from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data.

The Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking is trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments, and industry experts, the 2024 league table reveals how the global higher education landscape is shifting.

Globally, the University of Oxford topped the ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have seen shifts in their ranks. Stanford University moves up to second place, pushing Harvard University down to fourth.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) climbed up two places to third this year. The University of Cambridge slips to fifth place, after being in joint third place last year.

The highest new entry is Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Italy, which is positioned between positions 301-350. The bulk of the new colleges joining the ranking this year, nevertheless, are from Asia.

With 169 institutions, the US is the nation with the most overall representation. Of the top 200 countries, 56 are from the US. India has surpassed China (86 institutions) to become the fourth most represented country, with 91 institutions.

Four new nations—all from Europe—enter the ranking for the first time. In contrast to previous year’s pattern, where all the new arrivals came from Africa, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Armenia have been added.

The top universities for research environments are Oxford and Cambridge, while Stanford University tops the teaching pillar. MIT is first recognized by the newly titled citations pillar’s research quality pillar.

The University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates receives the top score of 100 for the industry pillar, while 28 institutions obtain the best score possible for the worldwide orientation pillar.

In addition to the 1,904 rated schools, there are an additional 769 universities listed with “reporter” status, which denotes that they contributed data but did not match our qualifying requirements to get a rank but consented to be presented as such in the final ranking.
