NPP MPs concur to let Ken Ofori-Atta stay

In response to President Akufo-request, Addo’s the Majority Caucus in Parliament has agreed to let the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and the Minister of State for the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, remain in their positions until the conclusion of the IMF negotiations.

A press statement released by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said the Minister of Finance will stay “until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November, 2022 and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill after which time the demand will be acted upon.”

This comes after almost 80 MPs from the New Patriotic Party demanded that the Finance Minister and the Minister of State in the Finance Ministry be fired immediately.

They said that Mr. Ofori-continued Atta’s tenure in office was delaying the country’s request for an IMF bailout because the Minister has lost all credibility.

In order to avoid a boycott of Parliament, they had petitioned the President to remove him.

This comes after almost 80 MPs from the New Patriotic Party demanded that the Finance Minister and the Minister of State in the Finance Ministry be fired immediately.

“If our request is not responded to positively, we will not be present for the budget hearing, neither will we participate in the debate,” Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi, spokesperson for the Majority caucus and MP for Asante-Akim North Constituency indicated.
