None of my appointees will engage in mining – Mahama

If elected president in the December polls, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says he will not think twice about forcing any of his officials involved in mining activities to quit.

The former President claims that his appointees will have to focus on their primary responsibility of improving the nation.

John Mahama stated that none of his appointees will engage in galamsey at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani at the Third Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining.

In the event that Mr. Mahama is elected president, he promised to implement a sustainable mining program in every mining community that will be distinct from the current community mining program and to heavily involve traditional leadership in the licensing process in order to help appropriately regulate mining activities.

“It will differ in all forms from the existing community mining scheme, which has undeniably become a conduit for enriching party chairmen, DCEs and other politically connected individuals.

“Indeed, in my government, if you are a minister, a DCE or an official and you undertake mining activity, I will ask you to resign and go and do the mining. You either choose to be a public official or choose to be a businessperson running a mine.”
