NDC Will Prosecute All Individuals Involved In SML-GRA Deal – Sammy Gyamfi

With a particular emphasis on the contentious agreement with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to take legal action against those involved in what it refers to as “illegal contracts” between the Government of Ghana and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML).

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, spoke to the media on April 29, 2024, at the party’s Moment of Truth series at the Accra headquarters. He emphasized the party’s commitment to upholding accountability and openness in government transactions.

Gyamfi stressed that if the NDC wins the upcoming elections, they will not fulfill any contracts that are deemed unlawful and will make every effort to recoup any money that was lost in these kinds of transactions.

“The NDC wishes to reaffirm the commitment made by our flagbearer and leader, John Mahama, that the next NDC administration will not acknowledge the unlawful contracts between the Government of Ghana and SML, upon taking office in 2025,” Gyamfi declared.

The contract between the GRA and SML, which purportedly guaranteed SML monthly payments of up to GH¢24 million for downstream services, is the main source of concern for the NDC.

Gyamfi referred to the deal as a “flagrant SML scandal” and declared that all those involved in the alleged wrongdoing would face legal consequences and that investigations would be launched to recover any illegal payments made to SML.

Following an exposé by “The Fourth Estate,” a controversy arose over the SML arrangement, and on January 2, 2024, President Nana Akufo-Addo decided to suspend the contract.

Following an audit by KPMG, SML’s services for upstream petroleum and minerals audits were terminated.

Nevertheless, Gyamfi asserted that the NDC would undertake its own probe into the affair, irrespective of the measures taken by the incumbent government.

“When we are elected to office, we will commence credible and transparent investigations into this egregious SML scandal, aiming to reclaim for the State all unlawful payments made to SML and to prosecute all those complicit in these illicit transactions,” he stated.
