“I see the NPP as the best party that can help the country” – COP Alex Mensah

Retired commissioner of police George Alex Mensah has asked Ghanaians to vote in favor of keeping the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power in the 2024 elections as he believes that NPP the best party that can help the country.

Mensah made the decision during an interview with Asaase Radio. He is also the prospective NPP parliamentary candidate for the Bekwai seat.

He asserted that the NPP is the finest candidate to run the country’s affairs since it has a track record of enacting laws that help the needy and the underprivileged.

“I see the NPP as the best party that can help the country. The whole world knows what is happening. And we know what this government is doing to make sure that Ghana will be able to overcome all these problems. At least we still have free SHS, don’t we?” Mensah said.

All public senior high school students in Ghana are eligible for free tuition, boarding, and food thanks to the NPP government’s 2017 introduction of the Free SHS policy. Many have applauded the strategy for enhancing secondary education access for all Ghanaians, regardless of socioeconomic circumstances.

The exorbitant expense of the insurance, however, has also drawn criticism from some. Particularly in the aftermath of the present economic crisis, the government has come under pressure in recent months to cut back on expenditure on the policy.

The administration has insisted that it is dedicated to the Free SHS program despite the pressure. Abena Osei-Asare, the deputy finance minister, told Ghanaians in August 2023 that President Nana Akufo-Addo will not revoke the policy.

“The Free SHS Policy is helping the Ghanaian vulnerable, poor and needy in society. President Nana Akufo-Addo will not cancel it but rather do everything possible to sustain the policy, because of the great impact it is making in the lives of Ghanaian youth,” she said.
