Koku Anyidoho angry at NDC over lack of proper celebration of June 4th

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has criticized the party’s present leadership for what he views as a failure to acknowledge and commemorate the June 4 political upheaval.

During an interview with Sky 102.1FM, a US-based station, Koku Anyidoho noted that certain party members have been intentionally trying to distance the NDC from its history of integrity and responsibility.

As to his assertion, the NDC’s core values stem from the June 4 coup, and anybody claiming membership in the party are required to observe June 4 and adhere to its tenets.

Koku Anyidoho acknowledges that there were excesses during the June 4th political revolt, but he doesn’t think they should stop the NDC from celebrating the day every year.

He attacked some figures for disregarding what he considered to be an important aspect of the NDC’s past, particularly party flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

“As a political party, June 4 is part of our tradition. The NPP still respects the Danquah-Busia tradition because it’s part of the party. People still think that June 4 is no longer relevant because Rawlings is no more, but as long as we are NDC, June 4 is part of our tradition.

“As a party, we have to continue to remember him and the ideals of probity and accountability. We are a social democratic institution, so we must hold on to these principles. Despite the excesses of June 4, we still have to observe it because it’s the foundation of our party.

“As far as I am concerned, June 4th gave birth to the NDC, so we must respect that tradition. No society grows without its history,” Koku said.

The topic of public lectures for this year’s June 4th commemoration was “Unity, Loyalty, and Vigilance for 2024.”

As part of the celebrations marking the 45th anniversary of the June 4th revolt, the lecture took place at Ajumako, the district capital of the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam Constituency in the Central Region.
