COP Alex Mensah interdicted over leaked tape

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, has interdicted Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex George Mensah for his suspected participation in the leaked tape controversy. Mensah is the Director General Technical of the Ghana Police Service.

After COP Mensah testified before the Parliamentary Committee looking into the incident and revealed shocking allegations regarding the police force, the interdiction followed.

COP Mensah was notified of his immediate interdiction in a statement signed by Director General, Administration, COP Christian Tetteh Yohonu.

He was instructed to hand over his weapons, uniforms, and other police belongings to Depol Logistics.

“Kindly be informed that you are interdicted with immediate effect following your involvement in the leaked tape being investigated by Parliament”.

“You are to hand over your weapons, uniforms and other police accoutrements and or properties including your authority badge to DEPOL LOGISTICS”, the wireless statement read.

COP Alex Mensah interdicted over leaked tape

In his testimony before the legislative committee, COP Mensah charged Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the IGP, with poor leadership of the Police Service.

He asserted that the morale of police officers had decreased as a result of the IGP’s leadership.

COP Mensah also acknowledged his involvement in politics and his efforts on behalf of a political party, though he declined to say which one.

He may be heard suggesting that the IGP must be fired in order to guarantee the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would win the 2024 elections on the leaked recording, which is consistent with his remarks.

COP Mensah, however, vehemently denied the tape’s veracity, asserting that it had been altered and did not adequately capture the first discussion with Daniel Bugri Naabu.

He said there was no intention to delete the IGP and admitted he couldn’t confirm a few facts on the audio.

COP Mensah’s assertions were refuted by Committee Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea, who insisted that the audio shown during the hearing was not manipulated. Bugri Naabu, who appeared before the committee and confirmed the tape’s veracity, acknowledged recording it in his own office.

His assertions are in stark contrast to Bugri Naabu’s evidence, which established the tape’s authenticity and the recording’s location in Osu.

Bugri Naabu further acknowledged that COP Mensah requested him to speak with Dampare’s probable impeachment since he was unlikely to assist the NPP in winning the 2024 elections.

The arrest of COP Mensah emphasizes the gravity of the leaked tape scandal and the ongoing inquiries into the alleged IGP coup plot.

The Ghana Police Service’s integrity is being upheld and accountability is being ensured by the police administration.
