It appears ‘reasonable, sensible’ to select Bawumia’s running mate from Ashanti Region – Mike Oquaye

There appears to be a rising desire for the New Patriotic Party’s running mate to come from the Ashanti Region, the party’s breadbasket.

That is the claim made by Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye, a former speaker of parliament and member of the Council of Elders for the ruling New Patriotic Party.

Selection of an Ashanti Region resident appears to be well-received, according to Professor Oquaye, who made this revelation in an exclusive interview with 3News’ Beatrice Adu.

“It appears that there is a feeling generally that if we had a candidate from the Ashanti Region,…the bread basket of the party, it will be reasonable and sensible to balance the ticket. Therefore, it is important to factor that into the equation….,” he suggested.

The choice of Mike Oquaye, an Ashanti Region native, as Bawumia’s running mate seems “reasonable, sensible.”

While the NPP’s constitution doesn’t appear to contain any explicit language requiring the selection of running mates in order to attain regional balance, the party has always selected candidates based on convention and custom.

Examples abound: previous President John Kufour selected Aliu Mahama, current President Nana Akufo Addo selected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Albert Adu Boahen selected Roland Issifu Alhassan as his running mate from the north.

The 1992 Ghanaian Constitution further highlights the necessity for the head of state to “achieve reasonable regional and gender balance in recruitment and appointment to public offices,” for example, in clause six(b) of Chapter six (6).

Professor Oquaye asked the potential candidate not to compete with the president in waiting.

‘’The vice president should be someone who is not looking out for the boss’ job; a person who is also not going to work like a co-president….that there will be no clash of personalities,” he advised.
