Free SHS has created opportunities for 1.4m students – Education minister

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the education minister, has praised the government’s free senior high school program, saying it has given more than 1.4 million pupils a chance to complete their secondary education.

Mr. Adutwum said he is honored to have been a part of the Free SHS journey thus far while speaking at the official opening of the National Service Scheme at 50 (NSS@50) at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

In six years, the effort, according to Mr. Adutwum, has balanced out the number of males and girls enrolled in secondary school.

A campaign to reform Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is presently underway, he added.

He continued by saying that the government’s earnestness and dedication to reforming Ghana’s primary education system is demonstrated by the numerous educational facilities that are now being built around the nation.

“Today, I am happy to note that from 830,000 students that were enrolled in our secondary schools, now we have 1.4 million of our youth enrolled in secondary schools,” Mr. Adutwum said. “I am happy to note that we are at a point where we have equal numbers of girls as boys in our senior high schools, something that nobody ever dreamt that an African country could achieve.

“TVET is undergoing transformation but I am so excited that he [President Akufo-Addo] has now turned his attention to the transformation of our basic school system.

“Schools that are under construction in many parts of the country are making a profound statement that public schools can do better and public schools are being transformed and TVET is going through transformation.”
