NPP flagbearership race: Bawumia leads with 61%

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary was won by Ghana’s vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. This puts him in a position to face former president and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the general election of 2024.

Three other candidates, including Kennedy Agyapong, the vocal MP for Assin Central, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former minister of agriculture, and Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Mampong MP, were beaten by Dr. Bawumia.

According to preliminary data, Dr. Bawumia received 118210 votes, or 61.43% of the total, while Mr. Agyapong, his closest competitor, received 71991 votes, or 37.41%.

In a distant third place, Dr. Afriyie Akoto received 1459 votes, or 0.76% of the total, while Addai-Nimoh received a pitiful 781 votes, or 0.41%.

The presidential primary on Saturday was voted on by 193339 delegates in all. There were 192, 441 legitimate votes overall, and 898 invalid votes. It came out to 94.63%.

NPP flagbearership race: Bawumia leads with 61%

Although Bawumia was expected to win the presidential primary from the beginning, he fell short of the 80% mark that his campaign team had targeted.

A number of Ministers and Members of Parliament endorsed Dr. Bawumia, who is well-liked in the NPP.

Dr. Bawumia, who has been President Akufo-Addo’s running partner since 2008, creates history by being the first non-Akan to lead the NPP into a general election.

It’s anticipated that the 2024 election will be a close race. Both Bawumia and Mahama are strong candidates, and they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

The results of the election will probably rely on a number of variables, such as the status of the economy, the campaigns of the candidates, and voter turnout.
