Are you wondering how to conceive a boy? If so, you might be interested in finding out the various methods said to stack the odds in your favour, when it comes to conceiving a baby boy. Be aware that various gender swaying theories have been around for decades.

Before we jump into the tips about how to conceive a boy, first, some important basics. The baby’s gender is determined by the father. The women carry the X-chromosome in eggs. Men, on the other hand, have X (girl-producing) and Y (boy-producing), so, each of the sperm carries one of the two chromosomes. When the Y- producing sperm penetrate the egg, the boy will be conceived. And if ‘XX’ is formed, the baby will be a girl.

Dr. Shettles, author of the best selling book, How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby, believes male and female sperm have a number of key differences. Through research, Dr. Shettles found male sperm to be weaker, smaller and faster than female sperm. He also discovered female sperm were more resilient, and were able to survive for longer periods inside a woman’s body.

So what can you do to favour male sperm fertilising your egg?

Dr Shettles believed deep penetration was important to give the boy sperm a head start. With less difference to travel, the boy sperm would be able to out-swim the girl sperm, and find the egg. The Shettles method claims that to improve your chances of a boy, you should have sex in positions that allow for deep penetration. It may not sound very romantic, but the closer to the cervix the sperm are ejaculated, the more likely they are to find the egg.

Here are some sex positions to conceive a boy:

The position most commonly recommended for conceiving a boy is doggy style. Doggy style allows for deep penetration, and is considered the optimum position in which to conceive a boy. You should kneel on all fours, and have your partner enter you from behind. You could also adjust this position so that you are kneeling or leaning over a raised surface, if you prefer.

Another position for deep penetration is standing up. According to some gender swaying experts, they believe boy sperm are given an advantage in this position. This is because they can swim faster than female sperm, in the race against gravity to reach the egg. For this position, your partner may be able to lift you up, or you prefer to lean against a wall.

It’s time to go bananas! One study claimed a diet high in potassium and sodium favoured the conception of a boy. Specialist in mammalian biology at Exeter University, Fiona Mathews, said: “We were able to confirm the old wives’ tale that eating bananas and so having a high potassium intake was associated with having a boy, as was a high sodium intake.”

Be careful though, bananas are one of the worst fruits for carbohydrate content (meaning it will spike blood sugar levels). If you have diabetes, or want to avoid gestational diabetes, go easy on the fruit. Stick to berries instead. As for sodium, sprinkle Himalayan salt on your foods, or perhaps consider stocking up on electrolytes. Avoid those sugary sports drinks from the supermarket and look for a low sugar electrolyte (ask a natural health practitioner). Electrolytes are fantastic for pregnancy and in the post-natal period.

Because male sperm is the faster of the two, Shettles suggests having intercourse as close to ovulation as possible. If you have sex several days before ovulation, the less resilient male sperm may die off. This leaves more female sperm to fertilise the egg.

Not sure how to tell if you’re ovulating or not? It’s a good idea to start charting your monthly cycle. Also, around ovulation time, you can use ovulation test kits (like pregnancy test kits) to see if you’re ovulating. There are also ovulation test kits that you can buy in many pharmacies across the country.

You may already know the underwear a man wears can affect sperm production. So this is something you may not want to mess around with, especially if the male partner has fertility issues. Tighter underwear causes to scrotum to reach a higher temperature, reducing the number of sperm. Boxer shorts are the best underwear if you want to conceive a boy. Tighter underwear apparently favour the survival of the more resilient female sperm.

There’s a popular argument that female orgasm plays an important role in conceiving a boy. Some sources claim that during female orgasm, an alkaline secretion is released into the vagina. This alkaline secretion gives male sperm an increased chance of survival. To increase your chances of having a boy, you should orgasm before your partner ejaculates.

It is said that temperature could decide the baby’s gender. A baby boy is easy to be created in the high – temperature environment and a girl in the low temperature. This is because the high temperature will affect the X-bearing chromosome and make Y-bearing chromosome more active. On the other hand, the low temperature is more favorable for the X-bearing chromosome and easy to make genetic make-up “XX”. So, if you conceive during the summer time, you would have more chances to get a boy. In winter, you are more likely to have a girl. Although there is no enough scientific evidence to show it’s authentic, it can be a reference.

A high sperm count would increase the chance to get a boy. So, when you plan to have a baby, you should avoid sex for 3-7 days before ovulation. This can ensure the father’s sperm count high on your ovulation day.

So you’re more likely to have a boy if…

– You have sex on your peak day (the day you are most fertile) or the day after. Your peak day usually occurs the day before you ovulate or the day of ovulation itself.

– You use artificial insemination (AI), as the procedure is usually done as close to ovulation as possible.

– You’re younger. Younger men generally have a higher sperm cell count, increasing their chances of a male sperm cell reaching the egg, while younger women have more copious, alkaline-quality cervical fluid, which also favours the conception of boy.

You’re more likely to have a girl if…

– You have sex 4 to 2 days before your peak day.

– The male has a low sperm count. It could occur naturally or due to certain factors such as heat, particular drugs and toxic substances which kill many male sperm cells, according to Shettles. It is for this reason that anaesthesiologists, for example, who are exposed to certain substances throughout their career, are thought to father more girls.

– The male is under stress. Men with careers that subject them to environmental stresses, such as a shift in atmospheric pressure, varying oxygen tension, possible radiation, or even excessive scrotal heat from tight-fitting clothes, are more likely to have girls as their fragile male sperm will not be able to survive the stress. Stress from one’s personal life can also result in low sperm motility.

– You use in vitro fertilisation, as researchers speculate that more female sperm cells are capable of surviving the stresses of the procedure, which can be quite rigorous.

So the sex of your baby really does have much to do with the timing of intercourse in relation to ovulation, the stress levels of the dad and environmental exposure, as well as fertility interventions.

As for deliberately determining the sex of the foetus before implantation in fertility treatment, in March 2012, the Minister of Health passed regulations relating to the National Health Act of 2003 to make social sexing officially illegal in South Africa. It’s considered ethically wrong, as people fear it might normalise selecting the sex of your baby and encourage ‘designing’ children.

Foods to avoid if you want to conceive a boy

– Avoid spicy foods which contain vinegar, citrus juices and fruits and tart/tangy flavours.

– Avoid eating dairy foods such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice-cream.

– Eat more foods which contain potassium such as bananas, broccoli, potatoes, spinach and brussel sprouts.

– Some researchers believe that taking a daily supplement of Evening Primrose Oil boosts the chances of conceiving a boy.

Mother-to-be: More Salty Food

Scientists in South Africa who have also made some research and found that the females eating more salty food and lean meat before pregnancy are much more likely to get baby boys than those liking to eat chocolates.

Mother-to-be: More Cereal for Breakfast

The study also shows the odds of a male baby go up sharply for women who like to eat cereal for breakfast compared with those who eat less. So, insist on having cereal for your breakfast before pregnancy. The chances of getting pregnant with baby boys will be high.
