How man faked wife’s death to extort money from Sammi Awuku

Sammi Awuku, the CEO of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), told a story of a man who said his wife had died in order to obtain money from him.

The parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akuapem North claims that the offender approached him with his wife’s obituary and asked for money to pay for her burial.

He claimed that after the man told him of his wife’s passing, he asked for proof.

Although Mr. Awuku did not reveal the precise time of the incident, he claimed to have fallen for the ruse and given money for the funeral.

The head of the NLA told this story while explaining how politicians are occasionally singled out for financial support under false pretenses.

He stated that, it took a meeting with the man’s friend for him to know he was deceived.

“About a month later, I met him and asked why he was no longer in black, just a short period after his wife’s burial. He was with someone, and the person asked him when his wife passed but he responded he doesn’t have to tell him everything.

“I was surprised at his response and later, the friend called to tell me his wife is not dead” he recounted on Accra-based Peace FM.
