Hopeson Adorye’s arrest politically motivated – Buaben Asamoa

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former member of parliament for the Adentan constituency and member of the Movement for Change, has said that Hopeson Adorye’s detention has political motivations.

Leading Movement for Change member Hopeson Adorye was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of setting off dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 General Elections.

The assertion was made by Mr. Adorye in an Accra radio interview that has since gone viral.

Mr. Buaben Asamoa clarified in an interview with Citi News that Mr. Adorye was taken into custody after being requested to come to the police headquarters on Wednesday.

He went on to say that he spent the entire day at the police headquarters with Mr. Adorye after Adorye was summoned to make a statement.

But at 6:00 p.m., they were informed that Mr. Adorye would be placed under arrest while they awaited additional orders from upstairs.

Mr. Buaben Asamoa asserts that the police are awaiting orders from higher, suggesting that the arrest is not only a police decision, and he feels that Adorye’s detention was made for political reasons.

Furthermore, he thinks that Adorye’s detention is an attempt to weaken the Movement for Change and suppress the outspoken activist.

“Because if Hopson has been up and running and there are people who are feeling a little edgy and Jiffy about some of the things he has been saying. And this is the way of muscling him, trying to frighten the movement for change, it won’t work. I believe strongly that it’s politically motivated.”

Presently detained, Mr. Adorye is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. Although the authorities are looking into a case of publishing false information, he has not yet been charged with a crime.
